The Fluke 8846A/SU benchtop digital multimeter (also known as a multitester) with upgraded software and data cable is a true RMS, auto-ranging meter for measuring current, voltage, resistance, frequency, period, and capacitance in manufacturing and electrical testing and repair applications. The meter includes an ISO 17025 Accredited Certificate of Calibration to ensure accuracy. The meter comes with a set of detachable test leads. The meter measures capacitance up to 0.1 farad. It uses a platinum resistance temperature detector (RTD) to measure temperature within a range of -200 to +600 degrees Celsius (C). The meter measures 2- and 4-wire resistance, and it has split-terminal jacks for measuring 4-wire resistance using only two leads (2 x 4 test leads sold separately), for improved accuracy. The meter's internal memory can store measurement and configuration data. The meter provides statistical information such as minimum, maximum, average reading, and standard deviation in numerical and graphical form for tracking measurement trends and sudden changes in readings. The user can set high and low limits for pass/fail testing. The meter can also express AC and DC voltage in decibels (dB), the power ratio of decibels to milliwatts (dBm), and percent of the reading relative to a preset reference value. The math mode manipulates readings according to the formula mx + b, where m and b are user-entered constants for scale factor and offset, respectively, and x is the actual reading as would be normally displayed. The relative mode stores a reading in memory to use as a zero point for subsequent readings so that multiple readings can be compared. The user has a choice of slow, medium, or fast measurement rate; the faster the rate, the less accurate the measurements. IEEE 488.2, RS-232, and Ethernet ports on the meter provide connection to a computer for data transfer and analysis and for remote operation (RS-232-to-USB cable, RS-232-to-USB cable adapter, and upgraded Fluke Forms software are included). Data can be exported in SPCI (IEEE-488.2), Agilent 34401A, or Fluke 45 format. Triggers can be set to respond to measurement, bus, front panel, and external inputs. A standby feature turns off the display and ensures the meter will not respond to front-panel, external, or remote command inputs. The meter has a removable handle that can be used to carry or prop up the meter during use.

This true RMS (root mean square) meter provides accurate readings when measuring linear loads, such as standard induction motors and incandescent lights, where the current or voltage has an undistorted waveform, or nonlinear loads, such as electronic devices or motors, where the current or voltage has a distorted waveform. When turned on, the meter is in auto-ranging mode and automatically selects the correct operating range for the property being measured. It can be switched to manual-ranging mode, which allows the operator to choose the appropriate operating range. The display has a 200,000-count resolution, meaning it can display up to 199,999 units (5-1/2 digits) before the operating range needs to be changed. It meets International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety standard 61010 and is certified for Category I installations up to 1000V (which covers protected electrical equipment such as small household appliances) and Category II installations up to 600V (which covers large household appliances and devices connected to a fixed power supply, such as refrigerators and air conditioners).
